Airport Tips for First Time Flyers – Navigate Like a Pro
Airport Navigation Guide for First-Time International Flyers
If you have never taken an international flight before, the airport experience can feel intimidating. The massive terminals, long queues, multiple checkpoints, and unfamiliar procedures can overwhelm even confident travellers. But once you know what to expect, it becomes straightforward. At Sky Visa in Indore, many of our clients are first-time flyers, and we always make sure they know exactly what to expect at the airport.
Before You Leave for the Airport
- Arrive 3 hours early for international flights (minimum)
- Check in online 24-48 hours before your flight if possible – this saves time at the airport
- Prepare your documents – Passport, visa (printed), boarding pass, travel insurance
- Know your terminal – Large airports have multiple terminals; verify which one your airline uses
- Keep all documents in one pouch – A travel document organizer is invaluable
Step-by-Step Airport Process
Step 1: Enter the Airport
At Indian airports, you need to show your ticket or boarding pass and photo ID at the entrance gate. Security personnel verify before allowing you inside.
Step 2: Check-In and Baggage Drop
Head to your airline's check-in counter. Present your passport, visa, and booking reference. The agent will issue your boarding pass and tag your checked luggage. If you checked in online, go directly to the baggage drop counter.
- Confirm your seat assignment
- Get your baggage tag receipt – keep it safe
- Ask about your gate number and boarding time
Step 3: Immigration (Departure)
Proceed to the immigration counters. Present your passport with the visa and boarding pass. The officer will stamp your passport and verify your visa. This usually takes 2-5 minutes. Answer any questions briefly and honestly.
Step 4: Security Screening
After immigration, you go through security. Remove the following from your hand luggage:
- Laptop and large electronics
- Liquids in a clear zip-lock bag (each container under 100ml)
- Belt, watch, and metal items
Walk through the metal detector and collect your items on the other side.
Step 5: The Departure Area
You are now in the international departure area. Here you will find:
- Duty-free shops – Shop for electronics, alcohol, perfumes, and chocolates at tax-free prices
- Restaurants and cafes – Get a meal before your flight
- Currency exchange – Last chance to buy foreign currency
- Lounges – If you have lounge access through your card or ticket class
- Charging stations – Charge your devices before boarding
Step 6: Boarding
Go to your gate at least 30-45 minutes before departure. Boarding usually begins 45 minutes before the flight. Have your boarding pass and passport ready. Board when your zone or row is called.
Step 7: On the Flight
- Store your carry-on in the overhead bin or under the seat in front
- Keep your passport and documents in the seat pocket
- Fill out the arrival/customs card if distributed during the flight
- Stay hydrated and move around during long flights
Arriving at Your Destination
Immigration (Arrival)
Follow signs to "Arrivals" or "Immigration." Join the queue for non-citizens/visitors. Present your passport, visa, return ticket, and hotel booking if asked. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry stamp.
Baggage Claim
Check the screens for your flight number and corresponding baggage carousel. Wait for your luggage. If your bag does not arrive, report to the airline's lost baggage counter immediately with your baggage tag receipt.
Customs
Walk through the customs area. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you are carrying items above the duty-free allowance, use the red channel.
Transit Flights – What to Know
If you have a connecting flight, follow the "Transfer" or "Connecting Flights" signs. You may need to go through security again. Check if you need a transit visa for the connecting country. Our visa consultants can advise on transit visa requirements.
